QuickPost – April Fools FTW

Posted on April 6, 2009. Filed under: Uncategorized |

love it or hate it, the April fools day joke on the Kanevian Blog went rather well. It only ended in one person wishing me death – or at least burning in hell when I died. However, most people got the joke and took it for what it was meant to be – an April Fools day joke. Not something that was meant to make fun of anyone who lost their job, not anything with some sort of deep meaning or hatered of Kaneva. I run a blog all about the world of Kaneva, what the fuck would make you think I hate it?

But, I digress… April fools day was fun this year and I think that most people actually enjoyed the joke.

How To Keep In Touch With You Kaneva Friends – Outside of Kaneva

Posted on March 23, 2009. Filed under: Uncategorized |

Since I haven’t been as active on Kaneva as I normally am I thought it would be a good time to write a post about how I stay in touch with all of my Kaneva friends even when I’m not logged into Kaneva – 1 word: Digsby.

I use Digsby to manage all of my Instant Messaging, Twitter, and Gmail Accounts (I have a ton of them).  Are you worried about Kaneva going out of business?  If so, now is the time to setup your “out of Kaneva” accounts so that you can stay in touch with all of your Kaneva friends.  We all have made some the best friends on Kaneva and would definitely not want to lose them.

Here are my steps for keeping in touch with your Kaneva friends, outside of Kaneva:

1. Download and Install Digsby – you can get it by clicking here (don’t worry, it’s absolutely free)

2. Setup a new gmail account – use your kaneva user name or put kaneva in the title.  Make sure you write down your login information cause you will need it later.

3. Setup a twitter account – again, use your kaneva user name or put kaneva somewhere in the title of the username

4. Setup an IM account with AIM, MSN (you can use your gmail address that you created in step 2), and Yahoo.  Make sure you write down all of the account information for each of these also.

5.  Setup a facebook and/or myspace account with your Kaneva username (they might let you only setup an account with your real name in facebook – this is optional)

6.  Startup Digsby (since you downloaded it in step 1)

7.  Once you have logged into Digsby, on the menu at the top of the client go to “Digsby” –> “My Accounts” and then add all of the accounts you have created so far.

You have now setup a bunch of different ways for all of your Kaneva friends to keep in touch with you.  And the best part is, with Digsby… all of this information is in one place.

You are notified of new emails, and all of your IM’s, no matter what account, come to the same place.

Now is the time to setup these accounts, due to an unstable economy and an unsure future for Kaneva – you never know when it will be your last login and last chance to talk to all of your friends.

How do you keep in touch with your Kaneva friends outside of WOK?  Let me know in the comments?

In case you haven’t done it yet, click on the button below to download Digsby.

For those that want to know more about Digsby – here is the information from their website:

Instant Messaging
  • One combined buddy list for all your AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber, and Facebook Chat Accounts.
  • Manage multiple conversations with tabbed conversation windows. You can drag tabs out into their own windows for important conversations.
  • Rename contacts with an alias so you don’t have to remember buddy names like ‘giantsfan123’.
  • If one of your friends has more than one IM account you can combine them into a single merged contact to eliminate duplicate buddies.
  • Send your friends SMS messages right from the IM window.
  • The InfoBox lets you check everyone’s status message and profile just by moving your mouse down the list.
  • Changing your status has never been easier. just one click right on the buddy list!
  • Multitask while you chat. Minimize the IM window and you see popups of new IM’s. Best of all, you can reply right from the popup and get back to what you were doing.
  • Log conversation history and find the information you need our search-enabled log viewer.
  • And so much more.
  • Manage your Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, AOL/AIM Mail, IMAP, and POP accounts right from digsby.
  • Get popup notifications when new email arrives. Clicking a popup takes you right to the message with auto-login into webmail accounts.
  • The email InfoBox gives you a snapshot of your unread messages with just one click
  • Perform actions such as “Mark as Read” or “Report Spam” right from the email InfoBox.
  • Send emails to your friends right from the IM window. The email is sent directly from any account digsby is tracking for you.
Social Networking
  • Stay up to date with everything happening on your Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and LinkedIn accounts.
  • Receive alerts of events such as new friend requests, messages, group invites, etc.
  • The social network InfoBox gives you a real time NewsFeed of what your friends are up to. Everything from new photos, to status updates, to upcoming birthdays is just a click away.
  • Set your Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn status right from Digsby.
  • Customize digsby with application skins to give it a personal look and feel.
  • Change the way your conversations look with themes – everything from simple AIM-style windows to 3D conversation bubbles.
  • Complete control over the layout of buddies on the buddy list. Change everything from buddy icon size to whether or not to show a snippet of their away message.
  • Sort your buddy list how ever you want! You can organize buddies manually, by status, by service, by name or by log size to place those you communicate with most at the top. You can even choose a secondary sorting method.
  • Customizable notification system lets you choose what events you want to be alerted about and how.
  • Digsby offers complete synchronization between computers and installations. Everything from the skin you chose to your pre-defined status messages follows you from place to place.
  • You can place a widget on your blog, website, or social network profile so you can chat with visitors right from digsby.
  • Manage multiple simultaneous file transfers from one simple transfer manager.

QuickPost – For All Those Looking For My Comments On The Kaneva Situation

Posted on March 19, 2009. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , , , , |

I am still trying to get all of my facts straight before I make any comments on the situation. The only “official statement” I’ve seen so far was the overly vague statement posted in the forums by Kaneva co-founder Greg Frame. I went to try to contact Shameless Plugs for more information… However, it looks like she was also let go from Kaneva.

I will be sure to post my thoughts and any information I gather as soon as I have collected it.

The First Kaneva Update To Ever Make Me Mad

Posted on February 11, 2009. Filed under: Dealing with problems, Uncategorized, World Updates | Tags: , , , |

In the past I’ve been annoyed by some of the issues that have cropped up with updates, but I was never really angered by it.  In this update they changed something that most users wouldn’t consider too important – your 2D profile page.

I spent several hours creating a complete custom profile page including custom graphics and css, dealing with Kaneva’s back-end systems that make it a pain in the ass to experiment with backgrounds and trying to make everything just the way I would like it.  Now I am left with this complete custom page being pushed to “Page 2” of my 2d profile!  What I’m left with is a landing page that shows  a bunch of useless info that I can’t get rid of like World Fame and Dance Fame… Who gives a shit what my world fame is, that says nothing about me as a person.  My original profile gives people insight into who I really am – not some status bar.

Don’t get me wrong, I am happy that they improved some things on the 3d side and added in a bunch of new assets – but c’mon….I want the option of what is displayed and how it is displayed on my profile.

I know I’m not the only one who is upset about this – I’ve seen other users complain about this on twitter and I’m sure if I spent a little bit of time on  the forums today I would see many more complaining.

So Kaneva – thumbs up for the improvements, but this is almost over-shadowed by the disregard for the work that some of put into their 2d profile page… I’m not talking about grabbing some blingtard myspace layout and tossing in the code – I spent many hours experimenting, designing, and coding for a one off page.

If you would like to review the notes on the new update check out THIS THREAD on the Kaneva Forums.

Let me know how you feel about the new updates in the comments below.
